“Incredible and unacceptable how few answers our residents are being given right now. It really does seem that other counties, states, cities have been able to provide a lot more information and clarity, and mass distribution” Matt Haney, San Francisco’s District 6 Supervisor tweeted a week ago after California’s Governor Gavin Newsom listed new mass vaccination sites that excluded San Francisco and the Bay Area. Haney announced he was going to call a hearing immediately with private health providers to discuss how with Public Health Care they can come up with a better strategy to improve COVID-19 mass vaccination.

The hearing did happen and at the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, Haney announced that they committed to having every San Francisco resident inoculated with the Covid-19 vaccine by June 30th, 2021; hoping that together they can provide 10,000 vaccine doses per day.

According to data from the SF Covid-19 Dashboard, the city has not exceeded 3,000 vaccinations in a single day, leaving approximately 7,000 vaccinations unfulfilled based on the new goal of 10,000 vaccine doses per day.

At the moment, California guidelines allow for the vaccination of residents that are 65 or older, however, health care providers like UCSF are not vaccinating residents under 75 who aren’t health care workers due to a lack of supply.

Another setback is the thousands of Moderna vaccine doses that are currently being withheld after California found that a batch of 330,000 of them caused a higher than average rate of severe allergic reactions.

The city still needs to administer 400,000 vaccine doses to residents older than 65 years old before they can move on to the next priority group.

Even though the State of California surpassed their goal of vaccinating 1 million people within 10 days, the main issue for the State’s cities is the lack of supply. If the numbers don’t improve, it will not be possible to have every resident vaccinated by the end of June.
